Log table (four-figure logarithms)

Common logarithms (base 10) with mean differences. Type a number to see its log and exactly where to look in the table.

Antilog table

How to read the log table

  1. Characteristic — one less than the number of digits before the decimal point: 22.35 → 1; 3.5 → 0; 0.045 → −2 (written 2̄).
  2. Mantissa — ignore the decimal point; take the first two digits as the row (22), the third as the column (3) → 3483.
  3. Add the mean difference for the fourth digit (5) from the same row → 3483 + 10 = 3493.
  4. Answer: log 22.35 = 1.3493.

Rules: log (a × b) = log a + log b · log (a ÷ b) = log a − log b · log aⁿ = n log a. To go back, use the antilog table.

Every value is computed with a computer to 4 figures. Printed books may differ by 1 in a few mean-difference cells.
