Whatever you do to one side, do to the other — add, subtract, multiply or divide by the same number.
Transposing: a term crosses the = sign and changes its sign. x + 7 = 12 → x = 12 − 7 = 5.
Bring x terms to one side, numbers to the other: 5x − 3 = 2x + 9 → 3x = 12 → x = 4.
Check: put the answer back in. 5(4) − 3 = 17 and 2(4) + 9 = 17 ✓
