Children's Day, also called Bal Diwas, is celebrated in India on 14 November. On this day in 1889, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was born. He later became the first Prime Minister of independent India.
Nehru was very fond of children. He spent time with them, listened to them and wrote letters to them. Children lovingly called him Chacha Nehru. He believed that the way we bring up our children decides the future of the country.
He was also a writer. His letters to his daughter Indira were later published as a book, ‘Letters from a Father to His Daughter’.
In schools, Children's Day is full of fun. There are quizzes, drawing and essay competitions, sports, songs and dances. In some schools teachers put on a show for the students. Children wear colourful clothes and enjoy sweets.
The day is also a reminder. Many children in our country still have to work instead of going to school, or do not get enough food and care. Every child has the right to education, health, play and safety, and all of us must help make that true.
Children are the future of the nation. If we take good care of them today, India will have a bright tomorrow.
