Short essay (about 120 words)
Diwali, also called Deepawali, is the festival of lights. It is celebrated all over India and by Indians around the world. It falls on the new-moon night (amavasya) of the month of Kartik, which comes in October or November.
Many people believe that on this day Lord Rama came back to Ayodhya after fourteen years in the forest, and the people of Ayodhya lit rows of lamps to welcome him. That is why we light diyas on Diwali.
Before the festival, people clean and paint their houses. On Diwali evening they draw rangoli, light diyas, pray to Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha, and share sweets. Diwali teaches us that light wins over darkness and good wins over evil.
Long essay (about 230 words)
Diwali, or Deepawali, means “a row of lamps”. It is one of the most loved festivals of India and is celebrated by Hindus, Jains and Sikhs, and by people of every background who join in the fun.
The festival usually lasts five days. It begins with Dhanteras, when many families buy something new for the home. The main day is Lakshmi Puja, on the new-moon night of Kartik. It is followed by Govardhan Puja and ends with Bhai Dooj, a day for brothers and sisters.
There are many stories behind Diwali. The best known is the return of Lord Rama, Sita and Lakshmana to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana. Jains remember the nirvana of Lord Mahavira on this day, and Sikhs celebrate Bandi Chhor Divas.
Weeks before Diwali, markets fill with lamps, lanterns, clothes and sweets. Homes are cleaned, painted and decorated with lights. On the night of Diwali, families wear new clothes, light diyas on doorsteps and roofs, make rangoli and share mithai with neighbours.
Crackers make a lot of noise and smoke, which harms the old, the sick, small children and animals, and adds to air pollution. A green Diwali — with diyas, rangoli and very few crackers — is safer for everyone.
Diwali brings families and friends together. Its message is simple: let light defeat darkness, let good defeat evil, and share happiness with everyone around us.
