Mental maths tricks
- Count on from the bigger number: 3 + 8 → start at 8, count 9, 10, 11.
- Make 10: 8 + 5 = 8 + 2 + 3 = 10 + 3 = 13.
- Doubles: 6 + 6 = 12, so 6 + 7 is one more = 13.
- Half means sharing into 2 equal parts: half of 18 = 9.
- Tens: 40 + 30 is just 4 tens + 3 tens = 7 tens = 70.
- Count back to take away: 15 − 3 → 14, 13, 12.
