Wind insulated wire around a soft iron nail and pass current — the nail becomes a magnet. Switch off, the magnetism goes.
- Stronger with more turns and more current.
- Uses: electric bell, cranes for scrap iron, speakers, motors, MRI.
Heating effect of current
Current through a wire makes it hot: heater, iron, toaster, bulb filament; a fuse wire melts if the current is too large.
