What is estimation?
To estimate means to make a good guess without counting or measuring exactly. We estimate every day: “There are about 30 children in my class”, “This bag weighs about 3 kg”.
- Look at a small part, count it, and think how many such parts there are.
- To estimate sums, round to the nearest ten: 48 + 31 → 50 + 30 = about 80.
- A number ending in 1, 2, 3 or 4 rounds down; 6, 7, 8 or 9 rounds up (37 → 40, 32 → 30).
