Is −2 bigger than −7? Add and subtract positive and negative numbers.
Integers games
Integers
Integers are …, −3, −2, −1, 0, 1, 2, 3, … On the number line, numbers get bigger to the right. So −2 > −7, and every positive number is bigger than every negative number.
- Adding: same signs → add and keep the sign (−4 + −3 = −7). Different signs → subtract and keep the sign of the bigger number (−9 + 4 = −5).
- Subtracting: add the opposite. 5 − (−3) = 5 + 3 = 8. −2 − 6 = −2 + (−6) = −8.
- Used for temperatures below 0, depths below sea level, basements, loss and profit.
For Class 6 and 7 (NCERT Ganita Prakash).
A one-page chart to stick on the wall, and a worksheet to practise.
