Spoon in tea, boiling water, sunshine — which way is the heat travelling?

Conduction, convection and radiation games

Three ways heat travels ऊष्मा का स्थानांतरण

WayHowWhereExample
Conduction चालनHeat passes from particle to particle; the particles stay in placeMostly solidsSpoon handle gets hot in tea
Convection संवहनThe warm part itself moves up; the cool part comes downLiquids and gasesBoiling water; sea breeze
Radiation विकिरणHeat travels without any mediumEven through empty spaceSunlight; warmth of a fire

Conductors of heat (सुचालक): metals such as copper, aluminium, iron. Insulators (कुचालक): wood, plastic, air, wool. Dark surfaces absorb more heat than light ones.

Sea and land breeze: by day land heats faster, warm air over land rises and cool air from the sea blows in (sea breeze); at night it is the other way (land breeze). Also see conductors and insulators and °C to °F.
