Melting ice or burning paper? Is a new substance formed?
Physical and chemical changes games
Physical or chemical?
| Physical change | Chemical change |
|---|---|
| No new substance; shape, size or state changes | A new substance is formed |
| Often reversible: ice ⇄ water | Usually not reversible: ash cannot become paper |
| Melting, boiling, tearing, dissolving, folding | Burning, rusting, cooking, ripening, curdling, digestion |
Signs of a chemical change: gas bubbles, a new colour, heat or light, a new smell, a solid forming. Burning a candle shows both: wax melts (physical) and wax burns (chemical).
Goes with NCERT Curiosity Class 7, Ch 5 “Changes Around Us: Physical and Chemical”.
A one-page chart to stick on the wall, and a worksheet to practise.
