Many food chains joined together. Follow the arrows — who eats whom?

What is a food web? खाद्य जाल क्या है?
A food chain shows one path of who eats whom: grass → rabbit → eagle. But a rabbit is eaten by snakes and eagles, and a grasshopper is eaten by frogs and sparrows. When all the food chains of a place are joined together, we get a food web (खाद्य जाल).
| Level | Who | In this web |
|---|---|---|
| Producers उत्पादक | Green plants — make their own food | Grass |
| Primary consumers प्राथमिक उपभोक्ता | Herbivores — eat plants | Grasshopper, rabbit, deer |
| Secondary and higher consumers | Carnivores — eat other animals | Frog, sparrow, snake, eagle, tiger |
| Decomposers अपघटक | Bacteria and fungi — break down dead matter | (in the soil, everywhere) |
Arrows point from the food to the eater — the way energy flows. Only about 10% of the energy at one level reaches the next (the 10 percent law), so food chains are usually short — 3 to 5 steps.
Why it matters: in a web, if one animal disappears the others can often eat something else — but every animal still depends on the producers. Also see the food chain game and ecosystem.
Goes with NCERT Science Class 7 and Class 10 (Our Environment).
A one-page chart to stick on the wall, and a worksheet to practise.
