What is a food chain?

A food chain shows who eats whom. It always starts with a green plant, because only plants can make their own food using sunlight. The arrow → means “is eaten by”.

WhoWhat they doExamples
Producers उत्पादकMake their own food from sunlight, water and airGrass, trees, wheat, water plants
Herbivores शाकाहारीEat only plantsCow, deer, goat, rabbit, caterpillar
Carnivores मांसाहारीEat other animalsTiger, lion, snake, eagle, frog
Omnivores सर्वाहारीEat plants and animalsHuman, crow, bear, hen
Decomposers अपघटकBreak down dead plants and animals, return nutrients to the soilMushrooms (fungi), bacteria

All the energy in a food chain first comes from the Sun. Many food chains joined together make a food web. If one animal disappears, the whole chain is upset — with no snakes, rats would multiply and eat the farmer's grain.

Follows NCERT/EVS Class 4–7 (food chains, herbivores, carnivores, omnivores).
