Xylem, phloem, tendon, ligament — what does each tissue do?
Tissues games
Tissues
A tissue is a group of similar cells doing the same job.
- Plant tissues: meristematic (dividing) and permanent — simple (parenchyma, collenchyma, sclerenchyma) and complex (xylem, phloem).
- Animal tissues: epithelial, connective (blood, bone, cartilage, tendon, ligament, fat), muscular (striated, smooth, cardiac) and nervous.
| Tissue | Job | In |
|---|---|---|
| Meristematic tissue | Cells keep dividing; found at root and shoot tips | Plant |
| Parenchyma | Simple living cells; store food | Plant |
| Collenchyma | Gives flexibility to leaves and stems | Plant |
| Sclerenchyma | Hard, dead cells; makes husk of coconut hard | Plant |
| Xylem | Carries water and minerals up from the roots | Plant |
| Phloem | Carries food from the leaves | Plant |
| Epithelial tissue | Covers and protects the body (skin, lining of mouth) | Animal |
| Blood | Fluid connective tissue; carries oxygen and food | Animal |
| Bone | Hard connective tissue; gives shape and support | Animal |
| Tendon | Joins muscle to bone | Animal |
| Ligament | Joins bone to bone | Animal |
| Cardiac muscle | Heart muscle; works all life without rest | Animal |
| Smooth muscle | In stomach and intestines; not under our control | Animal |
| Nervous tissue | Neurons carry messages | Animal |
For Class 9 (NCERT Exploration, “Tissues in Action”).
A one-page chart to stick on the wall, and a worksheet to practise.
