Plant cell diagram · पादप कोशिका

All living things are made of tiny cells — the basic unit of life. A plant cell has a few parts that an animal cell does not: a cell wall, chloroplasts and one big vacuole.

Parts and what they do

PartWhat it does
1. Cell wall
कोशिका भित्ति
A tough outer wall made of cellulose. It gives the plant cell its shape and support. Animal cells do not have it.
2. Cell membrane
कोशिका झिल्ली
A thin layer just inside the cell wall. It controls what goes in and out of the cell.
3. Nucleus
केंद्रक
The control centre of the cell. It holds the chromosomes (DNA) that pass on features to new cells.
4. Cytoplasm
कोशिका द्रव्य
The jelly-like fluid that fills the cell. The other parts float in it.
5. Chloroplast
हरितलवक
Green parts with chlorophyll. They make food from sunlight, water and carbon dioxide (photosynthesis).
6. Vacuole
रसधानी
A large sac full of cell sap. It stores water, food and waste and keeps the cell firm.
7. Mitochondria
सूत्रकणिका (माइटोकॉन्ड्रिया)
The powerhouse of the cell. They release energy from food.
8. Golgi apparatus
गॉल्जी उपकरण
Packs materials made in the cell and sends them where they are needed.
9. Endoplasmic reticulum (ER)
अंतर्द्रव्यी जालिका
A network of tubes that carries materials around the cell. Rough ER has ribosomes on it.
10. Ribosomes
राइबोसोम
Tiny dots that make proteins.

Plant cell and animal cell

Plant cellAnimal cell
Has a cell wall outside the cell membraneNo cell wall — only a cell membrane
Has chloroplasts (makes its own food)No chloroplasts
One large central vacuoleSmall vacuoles, or none
Usually has a fixed, box-like shapeUsually round or irregular in shape
Centrosome usually absentHas a centrosome

See the animal cell diagram.

Robert Hooke first saw cells in 1665, in a thin slice of cork, using a microscope he made himself.
