Human heart · मानव हृदय
The heart is a muscle about the size of your fist. It pumps blood all round the body, day and night. It has four chambers: two atria on top and two ventricles below. Blue shows oxygen-poor blood, red shows oxygen-rich blood.

Parts and what they do
| Part | What it does |
|---|---|
| 1. Superior vena cava ऊर्ध्व महाशिरा | A big vein that brings oxygen-poor blood from the head and arms into the right atrium. |
| 2. Pulmonary artery फुफ्फुस धमनी | Carries oxygen-poor blood from the right ventricle to the lungs. Unlike other arteries, its blood has little oxygen. |
| 3. Aorta महाधमनी | The biggest artery. It carries oxygen-rich blood from the left ventricle to the whole body. |
| 4. Pulmonary veins फुफ्फुस शिराएँ | Bring oxygen-rich blood from the lungs into the left atrium. |
| 5. Right atrium दायाँ अलिंद | Receives oxygen-poor blood from the body through the vena cava. |
| 6. Left atrium बायाँ अलिंद | Receives oxygen-rich blood from the lungs through the pulmonary veins. |
| 7. Valves वाल्व (कपाट) | Flaps that let blood flow only one way and stop it from flowing back. |
| 8. Right ventricle दायाँ निलय | Pumps oxygen-poor blood to the lungs through the pulmonary artery. |
| 9. Left ventricle बायाँ निलय | Pumps oxygen-rich blood to the whole body through the aorta. It has the thickest, strongest wall. |
| 10. Septum पट | The wall between the left and right sides. It stops oxygen-rich and oxygen-poor blood from mixing. |
| 11. Inferior vena cava निम्न महाशिरा | A big vein that brings oxygen-poor blood from the lower body into the right atrium. |
The path of blood
Body → Vena cava → Right atrium → Right ventricle → Pulmonary artery → Lungs → Pulmonary veins → Left atrium → Left ventricle → Aorta → Body
Blood passes through the heart twice on each trip round the body — once to pick up oxygen in the lungs, and once to be pumped to the body. This is called double circulation.
Some facts
- The right and left sides are named for the person's own right and left, so in a diagram they look swapped.
- Arteries carry blood away from the heart; veins bring blood back to the heart.
- The "lub-dub" sound of the heartbeat is the valves closing. A doctor listens to it with a stethoscope.
- Your pulse tells you how fast your heart is beating. Count it at your wrist for one minute.
This is a simple diagram for school. Real hearts have more vessels and are not so neat.
