Photosynthesis · प्रकाश संश्लेषण
Green plants make their own food. Their leaves use sunlight, water and carbon dioxide to make glucose (food) and give out oxygen. This is photosynthesis — making things (synthesis) with light (photo).

You will hear its name and see what it does.
Parts and what they do
| Part | What it does |
|---|---|
| 1. Sunlight सूर्य का प्रकाश | Gives the energy that the leaf needs to make food. |
| 2. Leaf (chlorophyll) पत्ती (पर्णहरित) | The food factory of the plant. Its green chlorophyll traps the energy of sunlight. |
| 3. Stomata रंध्र | Tiny pores, mostly on the underside of leaves. Carbon dioxide goes in and oxygen comes out through them. |
| 4. Carbon dioxide कार्बन डाइऑक्साइड | A gas from the air. The leaf takes it in through the stomata to make food. |
| 5. Oxygen ऑक्सीजन | A gas given out by the leaf. Animals and people breathe it in. |
| 6. Water जल (पानी) | Taken up from the soil by the roots and carried up the stem to the leaves. |
| 7. Roots जड़ें | Hold the plant firmly in the soil and take in water and minerals. |
| 8. Stem तना | Holds the plant up and carries water from the roots to the leaves. |
| 9. Glucose (food) ग्लूकोज़ (भोजन) | The food (a sugar) made in the leaf. Extra food is stored as starch. |
The equation
Carbon dioxide + Water → Glucose + Oxygen
It happens only in the presence of sunlight and chlorophyll. With formulas:
6CO₂ + 6H₂O → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂
Why is it important?
- Plants make their own food, so they are called autotrophs (स्वपोषी). Animals and people depend on plants for food.
- Photosynthesis puts oxygen into the air that we breathe.
- Leaves are called the food factories of the plant.
Try it: test a leaf with iodine solution. A blue-black colour shows that starch, made from the glucose, is present.
The chart has the labelled diagram and what each part does. The worksheet has the diagram with blank labels and questions.
